Larsen Bay
This was the greatest trip ever. I was given the day off to go to the coast with Jeff and Robert (Hudson's) and MIke and Pam Reese (from Austin). Along with Luke, the Pilot/Guide, we flew 1 1/2 hours to the coast. The ocean is beautiful . We landed right in the middle of several active and inactive Salmon Canneries. First, we bopped around in the bay to catch our bait for Halibut fishing, Hering. You know the scene from "Finding Nemo"? Ellie's favorite! You just drop the line in and these little silver guys attack the line. You pull up three and four at a time. After catching the bait, we went further out into deeper waters. The poles are soooo heavy! It is half the work to hold that and bob it up and down continuously. The waters were about 60-80 feet down and you fish right off the bottom. We caught a ton. My proudest moment was pulling up the biggest fish of the trip. We didn't have a scale, so when i was explaining how big it was, i got quite a laugh at my comparison. It was bigger than a sack of flour, but not quite a sack of brown sugar. Which makes it about 40-50 pounds. The wild life was awesome. You may be able to see in the pictures, the bears roaming around the abandoned canneries and the whales. You can see dozens of them in the distance. We were able to get close enough to capture one, but this picture doesn't even do this sight justice. They are amazing creatures. The image is like a fountain. you see one stream of water going up out of the water and then another and then another. We also saw some eagles and sea lions. It is very hard to capture into words this amazing experience. After the day was complete, we went back to get ready for the five course tasting menu and the last night with Hudson's. The food was beautiful and the night was awesome. The people on this trip made me proud to be a Texan. All were from Austin and they were all lovely people. Best week yet. I hope you enjoy my pictures. Miss you guys.
